The Art of Unified Energy

The elegant art of Hapkido contains kicking and striking techniques, quite recognizable to the Taekwondo practitioner, and throwing and ground defenses identical to those of Judo.  However, the hallmark of Hapkido technique is seen in its dynamic system of close quarter defenses including trapping, take-downs, and joint manipulation.  These techniques are easy to learn and are broadly applicable to many types of self-defense situations.

Hapkido, however, differs from other traditional styles in that it is not technique driven, but rather conceptual in nature.  Position is more important in a situation than the particular technique and flowing smoothly from one type of defense to another is more important that pure skill.  Thus it is ideal for people of all sizes, physical strengths, and levels of training.

Modern Hapkido training is very interactive and focuses on pure self-defense.  Practitioners often are amazed at how quickly they begin acquiring real usable skills.  Perhaps this is why Hapkido is the preferred system for most of the U.S. military and many police departments around the globe.
